caption: SHOAH ''Returning from work (enlivened by a band)''. Drawing by Polish artist Mieczysław Kościelniak (29 January 1912 - 5 March 1993). Trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, he then took part with the 70th Infantry Regiment in the Bzura counteroffensive of September 1939 towards the German invasion of Poland; in 1941 he was arrested and imprisoned in the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp, then transferred to Mauthausen and finally to Ebensee in Austria. After the liberation, on May 6, 1945, he remained in the ranks of the American army for a few months. His extensive production of drawings includes around 300 scenes of daily life and characters from his concentration camp experience, including a portfolio of 12 sketches entitled ''In the Valley of Hunger''. His artistic activity was greatly influenced by his terrible experience in the extermination camp. Drawing, Poland 1950.
