Ignaz PLEYEL (18 June 1757 – 14 November 1831), Austrian-born composer, music publisher, and piano maker, naturalized French. Kapellmeister at the court of Erdedy, his first opera performed was Ifigenia in Aulis, at the Teatro San Carlo in 1785. In 1791, he gave a series of concerts as a professional musician in London; it was a triumphant tour, and during his stay in the English capital, he met F.J. Haydn. Around 1795, Pleyel settled in Paris, opening a music shop and founding a music publishing house: with this he published more than 4,000 works over the course of 39 years of activity, publishing works by Boccherini, Beethoven, Clementi, Cramer, Dussek, Hummel, and Onslow. In 1807 he founded a prestigious piano factory in Paris, which his son Camille Joseph Stephan then continued to run.
