caption: Ignaz PLEYEL (18 June 1757 – 14 November 1831), Austrian-born French composer, music publisher and piano maker. Kapellmeister at Erdody's court, his first opera performed was Ifigenia in Aulis, at the San Carlo Theater in 1785. In 1791 he held a series of concerts as a professional musician in London; it was a triumphal tour, and during his stay in the English capital, he had the opportunity to meet FJ Haydn. Around 1795 Pleyel settled in Paris, opening a music shop and founding a music publishing house: with this he published more than 4000 works over the course of 39 years of activity, publishing works by Boccherini, Beethoven, Clementi, Cramer, Dussek, Hummel and Onslow. In 1807 he founded a prestigious piano factory in Paris which his son Camille Joseph Stephan then kept in business. Portrait in an oval, France, 19th century.
