The hostages were forced into the caves alive and killed in small groups; at the end of the atrocious Nazi execution, some mines were detonated, transforming the caves into an enormous mass grave. Only a year later, at the end of the war, the caves were reopened and the bodies exhumed. A mausoleum was built on the site. Italy 1944.
