FLORENCE 21 and 22 September 1864 Ponte Vecchio: celebrations with fireworks in Florence, the new capital of Italy. On September 15, 1864, an agreement was signed in Paris, between the Kingdom of Italy and France, which established that Italy renounced Rome as its capital and France would withdraw its troops from Rome within two years. This convention, however, contained a secret article, with which Italy undertook to transfer, definitively, the capital from Turin to another city. A commission, chaired by Prince Eugene of Carignano, on September 18, decided that Florence was the most suitable city to become the new capital of the kingdom of Italy.
