caption: Poldo GASPAROTTO (Leopoldo Gasparotto, 13 December 1902 - 22 June 1944), nom de guerre Rey, Italian lawyer and mountaineer, leader of the underground movement of Northern Italy, anti-fascist partisan shot by the Germans in obscure circumstances during a false transfer, a short distance from the concentration camp of Fossoli (Modena) where he was locked up, from which he had contributed to the escape of several comrades and was organizing a mass escape. About twenty days later, several inmates of the same camp were taken and included in the number of seventy political prisoners executed in retaliation for the killing of six German soldiers by partisans from Genoa on 25 June; since his fate was not yet known, it was perhaps assumed that he was among them.
