caption: Benjamin HARRISON (August 20, 1833 – March 13, 1901) 23rd President of the United States from 1889 to 1893, elected with the Republican Party. A Unionist veteran of the Civil War, during his term he validated the entry into the Union of six federal states: North Dakota and South Dakota, Montana and Washington in 1889, Idaho and Wyoming in 1890. His presidency was also characterized by an unscrupulous policy towards Native Americans, opening up to colonization about 11 million acres of Indian lands in Oklahoma and increasing repression on reservations in South Dakota, culminating with the assassination of the Sioux chief Sitting Bull and the Wounded Knee massacre.
