caption: Rutherford Birchard HAYES (October 4, 1822 – January 17, 1893) 19th President of the United States of America from 1877 to 1881 with the Republican Party, by a single electoral vote from his Democratic opponent; he was therefore awarded the office by decision of Congress (with a Republican majority) despite the popular vote having favored the other party. To rebalance tensions he agreed to the ''Compromise of 1877'' for the demilitarization of the Southern States after the outcome of the Civil War and the removal of the imposed Republican governments, thus favoring the establishment of racist Democratic governments and the development of racial segregation.
