caption: Martin VAN BUREN (December 5, 1782 – July 24, 1862) 8th President of the United States of America from 1837 to 1841, elected with the Democratic Party. Consistent with his belief that ''the best government is that which governs least'', he managed throughout his term to ignore the request to be admitted into the federation of Texas, which had emancipated itself from Mexico, so as not to fuel controversy between slaveholders and abolitionists, and to avoid creating diplomatic friction with Mexico. Under his presidency, the first great financial depression of the United States began, but his position according to which politics should not interfere with the economy pushed him to take measures only in favor of safeguarding federal funds, leaving citizens and businesses to provide for themselves. With an abolitionist stance on slavery, his administration maneuvered diplomatically with Spain's Isabella II over the Amistad case, mostly by referring it to the judiciary and by prevarication over the request for compensation for the economic loss (which Spain resigned itself to giving up well beyond its term, in 1864). Equally, he also refused to provide funds for the repatriation of the acquitted mutineers, which was provided by a collection promoted by a group of abolitionists.
