caption: Andrew JOHNSON (December 29, 1808 – July 31, 1875) was the 17th President of the United States from 1865 to 1869. He was elected for the Democratic Party as the 16th Vice President during the second term of Abraham Lincoln. He succeeded him to the highest office after only one month of his term, following the attack on Ford's Theatre in Washington. During his presidency, the American Civil War ended; his accommodating positions towards the secessionist nations often put him at odds with Congress, however his administration ratified two milestones such as the Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America (1865), already approved by Congress before Lincoln's assassination, and the Civil Rights Act (1866), despite Johnson's veto, as well as a law for the reconstruction of the Southern states conditional on their acceptance of the Thirteenth Amendment, and other civil rights laws. The conflict between the President and Congress resulted in an impeachment trial from which he was acquitted by a single vote. Photographic portrait, USA 19th century.
