caption: Thomas JEFFERSON (April 13, 1743 – July 4, 1826) American politician, scientist and architect, founder of the University of Virginia, 3rd President of the United States of America for two terms, from 1801 to 1805 and from 1805 to 1809. He was one of the signatories of the Declaration of Independence, founder of the Republican Party. Governor of Virginia during the War of Independence, from 1785 to 1789 he was instead a diplomat in Paris and during that period he toured Europe; on a visit to London, he was portrayed by Mather Brown (1761 - 1831) in the painting from which this 19th-century lithograph is taken.
