caption: Peter VALDO (1140 - 1206 ca.) or Valdo of Lyon. A rich merchant, he donated his wealth to charity and devoted himself to preaching the return to the purity and simplicity of early Christianity; he gathered numerous followers around him, but the Clergy did not approve of the reading of the Bible and even less of its preaching to the people, in the vernacular, by lay people; therefore the members of the first nucleus of the future Waldensian reformed church were condemned as heretics and excommunicated by Pope Lucius III. Detail of the base of the monument to Luther in the complex dedicated to him in the city of Worms, designed by Ernst Rietschel (1804 - 1861) but completed by his assistants after his death and inaugurated in 1868.
