caption: FRENCH REVOLUTION "The Torture of Louis XVI" (August 23, 1754 – January 21, 1793) in the Place de la Revolution (Place de la Concorde) at the hands of the executioner Charles-Henri Sanson (February 15, 1739 – July 4, 1806); the king was executed as "Citizen Louis Capet," and the execution was not successful with the first blow, so the blade had to be lowered a second time to completely sever the dethroned sovereign's head. A cordon of revolutionary soldiers maintained order around the guillotine. Hand-colored print from "Storia Universale illustrata," a popular work published in installments in Italy in the second half of the 19th century.
