subject date: 2004-12-02

caption: FRENCH REVOLUTION ''The execution of Louis XVI'' (23 August 1754 – 21 January 1793) in Revolution Square (place de la Concorde) at the hands of the executioner Charles-Henri Sanson (15 February 1739 – 4 July 1806); the king was executed as ''citizen Louis Capet'', and the execution was not perfect on the first shot, so the blade had to be lowered a second time to completely sever the head of the dethroned sovereign. A cordon of revolutionary soldiers kept order around the guillotine. Hand-coloured print from ''Storia Universale illustrata'', a popular work published in installments in Italy in the second half of the 19th century.
