caption: SACRED AND PROFANE A moment of the ''Sega la Vecchia'', a half-Lent rite of the peasant world: the old woman/oak tree on a sort of operating table, among doctors and nurses who try to save her with what has every appearance of a transfusion of wine. In the staging carried from house to house, the old oak tree is identified and ''cut down'' by two ''sawyers'', but foreign assassins kill it before they can dissect it; at this point her old husband comes looking for her, and out of pity for him everyone works hard to bring her back to life (starting with the old man who pities her by ''embracing'' her with passion). The operation will succeed perfectly: she will come out alive and fruitful amidst joy and dancing, symbolizing the eternal spring rebirth. The allegorical representation of a caricatural nature was particularly practiced in Tuscany, Emilia-Romagna and Umbria.
