title: ATTACK ALLE TOWERS IN COVER

subject date: 2004-10-13

caption: SEPTEMBER 11, 2001 Special editions of the weekly magazines ''L'Espresso'' and ''Panorama'' dedicated to the suicide attacks perpetrated in the United States of America by a group of terrorists belonging to the Islamic paramilitary organization Al Qaeda; both feature on their covers the Twin Towers in New York hit by two of the hijacked planes, in flames before they collapsed, and both feature huge headlines that evoke the spectre of a third world war. Two other planes were hijacked at the same time: one hit the headquarters of the Department of Defense at the Pentagon while the fourth, initially intended to hit the Capitol or the White House, crashed into a field in Pennsylvania due to a heroic revolt by passengers. There were a total of 2,977 innocent victims, in addition to 6,000 injured. The 19 hijackers also died in the attacks. Italy, September 20, 2001.
