caption: WWII ITALY 20:45 on 24 May 1941, the ''Conte Rosso'' sinks. Attack by submarines off the coast of the Strait of Sicily, on the ''Convoglio Fantasma'' (four fast ships). Built in 1922 by Lloyd Sabaudo of Genoa, it was an ocean liner requisitioned for the second time in 1940 by the Navy to be used for transporting troops to Libya. With the atrocious death toll of 1,297 dead, it was the Italian ship with the highest number of victims in the Second World War. Pencil sketch from the personal collection of memories of the Italian watercolorist and illustrator Gerolamo Bartoletti (9 January 1893 - 1962), entitled ''Album di Guerra''. African Campaign, 1941-42.
