caption: Pierre LOTI (Louis-Marie-Julien Viand, 1850-1923) French writer. Loti was a naval officer, but in his exotic novels he succeeded in effectively combining autobiographical motifs with the taste of adventurous plot and coloristic description. Among the works: Aziyadé (1879); Loti's marriage (Le mariage de Loti, 1880); Mrs.Chrysanthemums (Madame Chrysanthème, 1887); Ramuntcho (1897); Fisherman of Iceland (Pêcheur d'Islande, 1886). His posthumously published autobiography, Diario intimo 1878-1881 (Journal intime 1878-81) describes and outlines the characters of Loti's naturalistic exoticism: a poetics of melancholy and the omnipresence of death, of man's irremediable loneliness.
