caption: NAZISM: Doctor Sigmund Rascher (February 12, 1909 – April 26, 1945), right, performs a freezing experiment on human subjects taken from prisoners: a man is immersed in ice water to calculate the survival time in the event of a pilot crashing into the Arctic Ocean. His experiments were deemed cruel and criminal at the Nuremberg Trials, in which he did not participate because he was executed by his own men (who evidently feared his dangerous unreliability if he fell into enemy hands) three days before the Dachau camp where he was held for financial irregularities, the murder of his former laboratory assistant, and scientific fraud was liberated by the Americans.
