caption: CGIL CONGRESS to commemorate ''20 years of struggles for the unity and emancipation of workers, June 1944 - June 1964''. The CGIL union was established with the signing of the Pact of Rome on 9 June 1944, as a continuation of the General Confederation of Labor (CGdL) founded in 1906 and dissolved during the twenty years of fascism. In 1948 and 1950, from two of its internal splits, first the CISL and then the UIL were born. To honor the memory of Bruno Buozzi who was supposed to be one of the founding signatories, but was killed by the Nazis, the text of the Pact was dated 3 June 1944, which was believed to have been the last day of Buozzi's life.
