caption: Alois HITLER (7 June 1837 – 3 January 1903), Austrian customs officer, father of Adolf Hitler. Born Alois Schicklgruber to an unmarried mother, in 1877 he obtained a surname change and took that of his stepfather (who had married his mother when he was already five years old) claiming that he was in fact his natural father. This circumstance is controversial; alternatively, the biological father could have been the stepfather's brother, or a rich city Jew for whom the mother had worked, returning to the village pregnant; this latter theory contributed to the spread of rumours that the Führer had Jewish ancestry.
