In the former ghetto, the inscriptions on the Synagogue commemorate the deportation of eight thousand Jews from all over Italy, carried out by the Nazi occupiers and their Republican collaborators, starting with the roundup of two thousand and ninety-one (2091) people in Rome alone, perpetrated between 5:30 am and 2:00 pm on Black Saturday, 16 October 1943. Titled in Hebrew characters and adorned with the symbols of the Star of David and the Tablets of the Law, the stone ''calls souls to a higher vision of life, indomitable reaffirmation of the reborn faith of the Fathers''.
