caption: Pope JOHN I (470 – 18 May 526), born in Tuscany, elected 53rd Pope on 13 August 523. During his pontificate he crowned Emperor Justin I in Constantinople, during a diplomatic mission that was supposed to reconcile the king of Italy Theodoric, an Arian, with the Byzantine emperor, faithful to the Holy See and persecutor of the Arians, while Theodoric was tolerant of Catholics. Returning from the mission, which had not satisfied the Ostrogoth sovereign, he was imprisoned in Ravenna; already worn out by the journey, he tragically succumbed in a short time to the privations of prison: ''Saint John I in prison dies of starvation''.
