SAINT CATHERINE OF ALESSANDRIA (280/290 – circa 305) image depicting the Saint with the attributes of martyrdom: the palm and the cogwheel. According to tradition, she was the daughter of the Egyptian king Costa. Having been orphaned early, she saw the Madonna and Child in a dream, who put the ring on her finger, vowing her to virginity as the Bride of Christ. When the Roman emperor instituted great celebrations in his honor in Alexandria, she intervened, trying with profound arguments to convert the emperor himself; he was struck by her and wanting to marry her he summoned a group of rhetoricians to bring her back to the gods, but the opposite happened and the rhetoricians, converted to Christianity, were condemned to death; the saint at the torture of the cogwheel. From the suddenly cloudy sky a bolt of lightning flashed which broke the cogwheel, and the emperor was forced to have her beheaded: from her neck flowed not blood, but milk, symbol of her purity. Chromolithography, France circa 1900.
