caption: PAPA SAN MARTINO I (? - 655), a native of Todi, elected in 649, dies relegated to Cersona rather than meet the Emperor Constans II. Consecrated by the will of the clergy and the people, but without waiting for the approval of the Byzantine emperor, the latter considered the election illegal, and ordered the arrest of the pope considered usurper and his transfer to Constantinople. Here he was brought to trial, and emerged with a death sentence turned into exile in Crimea through the intercession of Patriarch Paul II. While he was still alive, Constans II imposed in Rome the new Pope Eugene I. Postcard chromolithographic n. 188 from the 'Collection of the Popes Romans' dedicated to Pope Pius X and blessed by Him.
