caption: NICHOLAS III (Giovanni Gaetano Orsini, c. 1216 – 22 August 1280) The figure of the Pope is surrounded by allegorical animals: the dove, purity and peace; the bears, strength and pride, as well as personification of the secular family of the pontiff. Allegorical miniature from the manuscript ''Vaticinia de Summus Ponteficibus'', a presumed volume of prophecies on future popes, controversially attributed to the Calabrian abbot, theologian and philosopher Gioacchino da Fiore (c. 1130 – 30 March 1202). Enriched and expanded in the 14th century, the volume provided figurative portraits of the presumed future popes and a summary description of their actions; probably intended to influence papal elections, the correspondence between the portraits and real figures was attributed a posteriori.
