caption: POPE ALEXANDER III (circa 1100 - 30 August 1181), aka Rolando Bandinelli was born in Siena, elected in 1159. In 1160 he excommunicated Federico Barbarossa, who supported the anti-pope Victor IV and his successors. Following the defeat at the Battle of Legnano, in the Grand Venice Congress in 1177 Barbarossa recognized the papacy of Alexander, who, in turn, took his excommunication. Postcard chromolithographic n. 89 from the 'Collection of Roman Popes' dedicated to Pope Pius X and blessed by Him. Rome, October 1903.
