Pope upright, actively campaigning against simony and the privileges of the clergy, his attitude aroused the discontent the cardinals, who just five months after his accession gathered to invalidate his election, replacing it with Clement VII in the genesis of the Great Western Schism. During his pontificate the Romans defeated the troops of the antipope Clement VII at Marino.
