caption: A PRIVATE COURT decides the fate of the workers: officials of Turin's large industrial monopoly have uniformed supervisors pick up workers, following the reports of observers planted among the workforce. They interrogate them and issue a sentence that can range from a fine to suspension, to "confinement" in specially disadvantaged factories. Anyone who invokes the presence of members of the Internal Commission or the Factory Committee, refuses to sign biased reports, or instead signs admitting to having joined a strike is subject to "lifetime dismissal." Armando Aires was fired because, while breaking into his cabinet, copies of the factory newspaper were found; now he waits in front of the plant for his former coworkers to come out so he can sell them the new issues. He joined Fiat in 1939, but had already been fired once in 1944 for the same reason: being an honest democrat. The FIOM has filed a complaint against these fascist-style behaviors, which violate both the Constitution and the Penal Code.
