caption: Father PIO of Pietrelcina (25 May 1887 – 23 September 1968), born Francesco Forgione, photographic portrait during a mass. The blessing position of his hands reveals the stigmata. A Capuchin friar since October 1902, he was ordained a priest in 1910. In 1916 he retired to the convent of S. Giovanni Rotondo. Here he lived an intense ascetic life, receiving in 1918 the sign of stigmata similar to those of Christ. The process of beatification began in 1983, and he will be canonized on 16 June 2002. Coloured photograph, Italy 1959.
