caption: SHINING HORN (Pharomachrus mocinno) bird of the Trogonid family widespread in the mountain forests of Central America. Venerated by the Maya and Aztecs, its precious feathers were used as exchange coins, and adorned the headdresses of emperors; inspired the myth of the feathered serpent god Quetzalcoatl. Two male specimens on a flowering branch, on the ground a bobcat (Lynx rufus) is targeting two capybaras (Hydrochoerus). Color illustrated plate by Wilhelm Kuhnert (1865-1926) from the work ''Life of Animals'' by the German biologist and naturalist Alfred Edmund Brehm (1829-1884), Vol. 5th Birds, 1893 edition.
