caption: POPE CLEMENT XIII (March 7, 1693 - February, 2nd 1769) born Carlo della Torre of Rezzonico was born in Venice, elected in 1758. During the pontificate had to deal with the French Enlightenment circles, lined up sharply against the cultural hegemony of the Jesuits in accord with Spain and the Marquis of Pombal in Portugal; Index put the Diderot and D'Alembert. His funeral monument, an imposing sculpture by Antonio Canova, is located in the Vatican Basilica of St. Peter.
