caption: ROMAN QUESTION Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Gasparri (5 May 1852 – 18 November 1934) and Benito Mussolini (29 July 1883 – 28 April 1945) signed the Lateran Pacts, composed of a treaty, a convention and a concordat (subsequently submitted to approval of the Italian Parliament and became operational on the following 7 June). The ceremony took place in the Palace of San Giovanni in Laterano, and definitively closed the almost sixty-year-old conflict between the Kingdom of Italy and the Holy See, which obtained recognition as an independent state under the spiritual and temporal government of Pope, who thus regained freedom of action with respect to the unknown brought about by the advent of fascism, while on the other hand Mussolini intended to exploit the reconciliation so as not to have obstacles in bringing the large audience of Catholics to the fascist movement.
