caption: RADIO LIBERA ''Radio Break Station'', founded in Pioltello (Milan) in the early 1980s by Massimiliano Crespi, attempted to distinguish itself first by offering only soft music, then by changing the name and programming to Rete Italia International; the mascot is a curious DJ-alien with headphones and microphone, generally triangular, with big feet and a G on his chest. The station stopped broadcasting in 1990. At the beginning of the 1970s, some local pirate radio stations rose up in Italy, challenging the government's monopoly on radio and television broadcasting. The liberalization of the airwaves sanctioned by the ruling of the Constitutional Court n. 202 of 28 July 1976 opened the doors to countless local private broadcasters. Whether they defined themselves as democratic, independent or commercial, compared to state radio they enjoyed the advantage of direct contact with the public, which took the form of participation with telephone interventions or even just requests and dedications of musical pieces.
