From left: the Norwegian Roald Amundsen (16 July 1872 – 18 June 1928), who was the first to travel the Northwest Passage between the Atlantic and the Pacific in 1903-06; the American Robert Peary (6 May 1856 – 20 February 1920), who reached the North Pole in 1908 together with M. Henson and four anonymous Eskimos; and finally the British Ernest Henry Shackleton (15 February 1874 – 5 January 1922), who repeatedly attempted to reach the South Pole, but never succeeded, and never caused the death of any crew member in the process. For three years he held the record for the closest approach to the South Pole. He explained his decision to interrupt the attempt with the laconic statement: ''Better a live donkey than a dead lion''. Photograph by anonymous, circa 1915.
