caption: Rachel BESPALOFF (May 14, 1895 - April 6, 1949) French writer and philosopher of Ukrainian-Jewish ancestry but born in Bulgaria. His family of origin, due to racial prejudices, emigrated to Switzerland and then settled in France. Rachel took root in Paris where she frequented lively intellectuals, taught literature and music, wrote in critical and philosophical journals. To escape the racial laws again she was forced with her daughter and husband to move outside Paris and then for further security, she emigrated to the USA where, however, she never managed to settle in.
