caption: William SHAKESPEARE (1564-1616) "Macbeth sees the ghost of Banco". Now King of Scotland the sovereign has no peace, and orders the assassination of Banco and his son, so that the second prophecy that sees Banco as the founder of a royal dynasty does not come true; the young man escapes the ambush, but his father dies and Macbeth perceives the presence of his ghost at the banquet which is supposed to celebrate his triumph. From the Shakespearean tragedy Giuseppe Verdi has drawn his tenth opera, to a libretto by Francesco Piave, and since 1948 more than a dozen cinematographic interpretations have been made.
