caption: DIVINE COMEDY (1321) Purgatory, Canto II. ''Love that speaks in my mind/ Then he began so sweetly/ That the sweetness still rings within me'' (II, II, 112-114). The soul of the Florentine musician Casella (1250 – 1300) sings a song from the Convivio for his friend Dante, who is tired from his journey to the underworld. In the illustration, on the left the Supreme Poet Dante Alighieri (14 May/13 June 1265 – night between 13 and 14 September 1321) at his desk and on the right the scene described, all enclosed in an allegorical frame representing Paradise, Purgatory and Hell.
