caption: LAIKA (1954 – November 3, 1957), the dog chosen for the launch inside the Sputnik II satellite: the first living being sent into orbit, to test the possibility of survival. The mission did not include reentry: the capsule was equipped with food, water and vital signs detectors, the dog died a few hours after the launch, presumably due to the lack of thermal protection; the lack of heat shield also caused the complete disintegration of the satellite and its host when it re-entered the atmosphere 5 months later. USSR November 3, 1957.
