caption: Marie Sophie von LA ROCHE (6 December 1730 - 18 February 1807), born Marie Sophie Gutermann von Gutershofen, is considered to be the first financially independent professional writer in Germany. The La Roche spouses had an appreciated literary salon in their home in Ehrenbreitstein, frequented by writers and intellectuals; the fortune of her first epistolary novel introduced Marie Sophie to the world of publishing, where she was also the director and editor of "Pomona", the first German women's magazine, as well as the author of numerous travel diaries, through which she managed to keep herself and his large family even after the loss of his widow's pension due to the French revolutionary occupation.
