DEMETRIUS I of Macedonia (337 BC - 283 BC) known as Poliorcete (city minister), played an important part in the struggles of the Diadochs, the Macedonian generals who at the death of Alexander the Great (323 BC) contended for control of his empire. With his father Antigonus Monophthalm he was a proponent of the principle of the unity of the Empire of Alexander, against the separatist tendencies and the equilibrium of the other generals. In 306, after the naval victory reported in Salamina of Cyprus against the satrap of Egypt Ptolemy, Antigonus and Demetrius assumed the title of king and their example was followed by the other satraps: Ptolemy in Egypt, Seleucus in Syria, Lysimachus in Thrace and Agathocles in Syracuse. Profile portrait on coin, Macedonia, 3rd century BC
