subject date: 2019-06-11

caption: SANT'ERCOLANO (? - 549) bishop and patron of Perugia, holds the model of the Piazza Grande with the Palazzo dei Consoli, the ancient Cathedral, the Chapel of Sant'Ercolano and the octagonal bell tower, now disappeared; probably the oldest representation of the city. In the "Dialogues" of St. Gregory the Great it is said that St. Herculaneum suffered martyrdom at the hands of the besieging King Ostrogoto Totila, to whom he had tried, in an extreme attempt, to prevent the conquest of Perugia with a trick. Commemoration 7 November. Painting on panel of Meo da Siena's workshop, from the abbey of Santa Maria di Valdiponte (Montelabate). Perugia, early fourth century.
