title: THE GIOPPINO FAMILY

subject date: 2004-08-26

caption: GOITH Gioppino's family is having polenta for lunch. A herring is dropped from above into the center of the table, hanging from a string, on which each person rubs their slice of polenta to flavor it. All the members of the family suffer from goiter, a benign increase in the volume of the thyroid gland. The image ironizes on a real problem that afflicts poor populations, affected by this pathology resulting from a diet lacking in iodine, typical of continental or mountainous areas, far from the sea; Gioppino is in fact the Bergamo mask, with his wife Margì and the whole family. Chromolithographic postcard, Italy, late 19th century.
