caption: SAINT DENIS (3rd century) First bishop of Paris, Saint Dionysius was sent from Italy to the then Roman Gaul as a missionary to preach Christianity in the city of Lutetia, today's Paris. The religious fervor that his preaching managed to arouse alarmed the pagan priests, who, feeling threatened, condemned him to death: he was beheaded in the second half of the third century. Patron of Paris, it is commemorated on 9 October; among the statues of the Cathedral of Notre Dame, in the portal of the Virgin in the main facade, is depicted between two angels, with the head severed in his hands.
