Taking inspiration from the request of the governor of California Leland Stanford, who in 1872 challenged him to confirm his hypothesis that there was a moment in the race in which the animal does not support any paw, the photographer studied the question for a long time and, supported by progress in the photosensitivity of the materials, which were then accompanied by the unusual use of flashes of electric light to shorten the exposure, he succeeded in developing a system of 24 cameras arranged parallel to the track, driven by the passage of the horse itself.
