Francesca SCANAGATTA (1 August 1776 - 20 November 1864) Italian soldier with Austrian citizenship, officer of the Army of the Holy Roman Empire, the first woman to be drafted into the imperial forces, albeit with an expedient. In 1794 his brother Giovanni should have attended the Teresian Military Academy in Wiener Neustadt, but he fell ill; Francesca took his place disguised as a man, made excellent profits and participated with honor in the French revolutionary wars, earning a gold medal of merit. In 1800 she was discovered and discharged with the rank of lieutenant and a pension; he later married and had four children.
