caption: Napoleon BONAPARTE (15 August 1769 - 5 May 1821) elected First Consul of the French Republic in 1799. The mandate had been conferred by the Senate for ten years, but already in 1802 the following question was submitted to the popular vote: " Napoleon Bonaparte will be console for life? ". All eligible citizens were called to vote, 3.574.259 were the voters: 8.374 were against, 3.568.885 in favor. He actually held office only until 1804, when he declared himself emperor.
