caption: POPULAR NOVEL "The dramas of Paris - The mysterious legacy" (1857), cover of the first novel by the French writer Pierre Alexis Ponson du Terrail (8 July 1829 - 10 January 1871) in which appears the character of Rocambole; in this first appearance Joseph Fipart alias Rocambole is a negative, collateral character, who kills his principal and ends up in prison. During the course of the next two novels there will be a transformation, a moral growth from which it will emerge with the characteristics of the adventurer and gentleman thief with whom he remained in popular memory. In the illustration by Tancredi Scarpelli (1866 - 1937) the man on the ladder, with the dagger between his teeth, illuminates the half-submerged corpses of the couple of victims.
