caption: Nikolaus Ludwig von ZINZENDORF und POTTENDORF (26 May 1700 - 9 May 1760), German theologian, Count of the Empire. Beginning with the Lutheran pietism of Philipp Jacob Spener, he traveled to the Netherlands, Switzerland and France to confront Jansenism; when in 1722 a community of Bohemian Brothers settled in his Saxon estate, welcomed them and took the lead, founding with them the community of Herrnhut and trying not without difficulty to bring them closer to the pietist reform. In 1737, exiled from the local Lutheran Church, he became bishop of the Bohemian Union and dedicated himself to increasing its diffusion in Greenland, Africa, Middle East, India and the Americas.
