caption: Saint LUCIA (283 - 13 December 304), a Christian martyr, invoked as a protector of sight because of the name that evokes the light, the eyes and the soul. Betrothed to a young pagan, having accompanied her mother Eutichia on a pilgrimage to the sepulcher of Sant'Agata to invoke her healing from a hemorrhagic disease that no cure had been able to solve, during the prayer she had a dreamlike vision in which Agatha appeared to her announcing that she would she herself could heal her mother with the strength of her faith, and even anticipate her approaching her martyrdom. Returning to Syracuse, to the recovery of her mother Lucia decided to consecrate herself to Christ and strip off her goods by giving them to the poor. His promised husband, perplexed and annoyed by his generous actions, after having refused his confirmation of his suspicions, denounced her as a Christian. When Diocletian's laws were subjected to multiple tortures to tear away her abjuration, she did not waver, survived miraculously and finally cut her throat. The popular devotion, since the fifteenth century, loves to attribute the episode in which he would have preferred to tear his eyes, or get rid of them, rather than give in to the seduction of a powerful. Commemoration on December 13, the day of death (Dies Natalis, birth to heaven). Colored engraving, Italy 1886
