caption: San LEONARDO of Noblac (circa 496 - November 6, 545 or 559), French abbot. Born in a noble family, he knew his spiritual vocation since he was young, preferring chivalrous training to the teachings of Saint Remy, then Archbishop of Reims, who had kept him baptized. Like his mentor, he received from the neoconverted King of Franks Salii Clodoveo the privilege of liberating any prisoner he felt innocent, an opportunity to which he dealt extensively. Instead he refused to offer the bishop's seat, preferring to retire to the monastery and then to build around 520 his hermitage in the Pauvain forest, where he spent the rest of his life surrounded by many followers. It was one of the most revered saints in Europe in the Middle Ages. Commemoration on November 6, the day of death (Dies Natalis, birth in the sky). Colored Etching, Italy 1886
